Floods and Memories
Each year, thousands of square miles of landmass in Assam, India, are inundated by the raging Brahmaputra. Each year thousands by the banks of the river lose something. Sometimes the very foundation of their lives and their identity are devoured by the unforgiving torrents. However people rebuild their lives. With the loss of everything tangible that they had, they carry on, by recreating their worlds with memories of what was. This documentary photography project is about these lives and their memories.
These images were exhibited at the German Cultural Centre, New Delhi, in collaboration with the research cluster “Asia and Europe in the Global Context”, University of Heidelberg, and at the Heidelberg University.
